Wheat Kings Read To Succeed Returns

Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in partnership with CIBC have announced the return of the popular "Read to Succeed" Program for the 2014-15 Western Hockey League season.
The program, which was introduced by the Wheat Kings, CIBC and Brandon School Division in 2004 was designed after a pilot project developed by the WHL's Vancouver Giants eight years ago. It features several members of the hockey club visiting schools throughout Brandon and surrounding area.
Student participation during the first few years of the local program has come in at virtually 100%, with many of the students exceeding the programs required by the participating schools.
The 2013-14 program involved close to seventy classrooms, thirty schools and over 1,000 tickets. The Read to Succeed program encourages students in grades two to five to spend extra time reading - both at home and in school.
As in past years, several Wheat King players will visit schools this season, talking to students about the importance of reading and education. In all cases, the players will read to the students and upon successfully completing a literacy challenge - introduced by each classroom teacher - the players will reward them with bookmarks and complimentary tickets to an upcoming game at Westman Communications Group Place.
The tickets are made possible through the generous support of CIBC.
Six veterans, including newly acquired Macoy Erkamps make up this year's Read to Succeed Team. The former Lethbirdge Hurricane defenceman will be joined by defencemen Eric Roy and Colton Waltz as well as forwards Peter Quenneville, Tim McGauley and Quintin Lisoway of Neepawa.
Each classroom presentation, which will include time for reading, questions and answers will take approximately 25-30 minutes. Schools or classrooms interested in scheduling a Wheat Kings' CIBC Read to Succeed visit are encouraged to email office@wheatkings.com.
On the ice, the Wheat Kings begin their longest road trip of the season Wednesday night in Prince George. Brandon will play a total of seven games on its annual west coast road trip - five against the Canadian based Western Conference clubs as well as Lethbridge and Medicine Hat on the way back.
Brandon is coming off back to back wins on home ice - 8-3 over Swift Current on Friday and 10-3 against Portland on Saturday night. The Wheat Kings next home game is Friday, November 7th against the visiting Saskatoon Blades.
