Salem Red Sox Game Notes

July 25, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

The Salem Red Sox play the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for the first time since May tonight at LewisGale Field. First pitch is at 7:05.

Where'd The Offense Go?: After Salem's bats erupted for 22 runs and 28 hits in the first two games against Lynchburg, the Sox were shut- out on just five hits last night. Jarrett Miller was outstanding for Lynchburg, surrendering just four hits in seven and two thirds. It still ended up a pretty productive offensive series for the Sox. The 22 runs were the most Salem scored in a two game stretch since May 8th and 9th against Carolina, when the Sox scored 23 over those two days (18 of the 23 runs came in one game). The Sox 28 hits were the most over a two game stretch all season.

Major Turnaround: Cody Kukuk has been outstanding in July after a rough start to his Carolina League career. Kukuk has posted a 2-0 record in July, holding a 1.59 ERA this month. Cody has walked just eight compared to 20 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched in four starts this month. This is a major turnaround from a nightmarish June. Ku- kuk was 0-3 with a 19.55 ERA in June. Cody walked 19 and only struck out nine in only nine and two thirds innings across four starts that month. He has lasted five innings and allowed a run or less in three of his four starts this month, with his July 8th outing cut short by rain.

Season Check, Through 100: Wednesday night marked Salem's 100 game of the season, putting the Sox at 47-53 through its first 100 contests of 2014. During last year's Mills Cup championship season, Salem was 49-51 through its first 100 games, on July 21st. Salem held a .258 team average and 4.27 team ERA in those first 100 games. This season, Salem held a .255 team batting average and 4.21 staff ERA after 100 contests. The Sox were four games out of first place in the second half standings this year. Through 100 games last year, Salem was still three games out of first place.

Notable Nuggets: Last night was just the third time over the last 27 games dating back to June 25th that Salem's starter allowed more than three earned runs. Furthermore, including last night, Sox start- ers have still only surrendered two earned runs or less in 20 of their last 27 starts. The Sox are 13-14 over those 27.

The Salem Sox are just 7-21 against Potomac and Frederick this sea- son, while they are 40-33 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 2-13 against the Keys and P- Nats, and 12-6 against its other five league opponents.

Wednesday night's win was Salem's seventh road win in the month of July. That equals the total road wins for the Sox in May and June combined. Salem was just 2-11 on the road in June and is 7-4 away from LewisGale Field in July. Conversely, the Sox were 10-3 at home in June and are only 1-9 at home in July.

While Salem swept the Pelicans to open the season, Myrtle Beach has won six straight in the season series. The Pelicans have out- scored the Sox 45-24 over those six contests.
