Ward Named Giants Head Coach

Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Giants announced on Thursday that Troy G. Ward has been named the fourth Head Coach in team history.

"We're looking forward to a new era of Giants hockey," said General Manager Scott Bonner. "When I did research with some highly regarded alumni, they all spoke very highly of Troy, and we think he'll be a perfect fit for us."

Ward joins the Giants after spending the last three seasons as the Head Coach of the AHL's Abbotsford Heat, the affiliate of the Calgary Flames. The Minnesota native compiled a regular season record of 119-83-26 over his three years with the Heat, leading the team to the post-season on two occasions.

"It's an honour," said Ward of joining the Giants. "You talk about the WHL and the history of the league and everything that goes with it and the exposure, and obviously Vancouver is right there at the top."

Ward was also an Assistant Coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1997-2000 and has served as a Head Coach in the ECHL where he won the John Brophy Award as Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the Trenton Titans to the Kelly Cup Finals.

In his playing days, Ward suited up for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the NCAA before becoming an Assistant Coach and eventually the Head Coach of his alma mater at the age of 25.
