Undefeated Mustangs to Host Newman Cup, Sockers Win in Monterrey

1/28/14 - The Chicago Mustangs have had a lot of big weeks this season, but last week could have been the biggest. On Wednesday, the Mustangs were awarded the Newman Cup Championship Weekend and will host the semifinals and final on March 15 and 16 at the Sears Centre. On Friday and Saturday they put on a fireworks show in Harrisburg, taking two games from the Harrisburg Heat to improve to 12-0.

The Heat showed spunk in both games, but could not keep up with the speedy Mustangs in the second half both nights. The wins enabled the Mustangs to clinch their first Eastern Division title.

Two of Chicago's potential playoff opponents, the San Diego Sockers (11-3) and Monterrey Flash (12-3), did battle Sunday in Monterrey and the Sockers avenged an earlier home loss by handing the Flash their first home loss, 8-6.

The game featured five lead changes, but San Diego never trailed again after Miguel Luna tied the score at 1-1 at 3:08 of the first quarter.

Kraig Chiles (four goals) and Aaron Susi (two goals, two assists) led the San Diego attack. The Sockers finished the season 8-0 on the road.

Player of the Week

Kraig Chiles, San Diego Sockers

With just four points in his first three games, Kraig Chiles was off to a slow start and the Sockers were off to their slowest start at 1-2. Since then it's been like old times. The Sockers have won 11 of their last 12 and Chiles has matched his record setting 72 point pace over his last 11 games. His meteoric rise through the scoring ranks culminated with eight goals and five assists this weekend against Saltillo and Monterrey. His four goal night in Monterrey Sunday put him on top of the goals and points boards. Chiles also had the game-winning goal in both games this weekend, giving him four on the season, also tops in the league.

Kick Starters - Conversations you should be having about the PASL

Tovar, Martinez Chasing Assist Crown

Enrique Tovar of the Las Vegas Legends already holds the PASL assist record, but he's on the verge of rewriting the record book. Tovar set the record last year with 33, but he already has 32 assists with three games left. Monterrey's Genoni Martinez, second with 30 could also reach or surpass 33, but the Flash only have one game left this season. Tovar is also gunning for the points lead. He has 51, two points behind Kraig Chiles, but Tovar has a game in hand over Chiles.

Heat Heading Back Home in 2014-15

The Harrisburg Heat are leaving the Equine Center, which they called home the last two seasons and are moving a few hundred feet away to the 7,300 Farm Show Arena, which they called home from 1991-2003. The Heat also raised $2,500 for Pinnacle Health's Children's Resource Center through their end of season home jersey auction.

20-20 Vision

The Sacramento Surge's recent improved play hit a bump in the road. The Surge lost 20-1 at Las Vegas and 20-6 the next day in Tijuana against the Toros. The good news is their major travel for the season is over, with just an 87 mile trip to Bay Area followed by two home games remaining.

B-52s Advance in US Open With Wild Win over Tulsa

The Wichita B-52s advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open Arena Soccer Championships, slipping past Tulsa 10-9 on the road. Hard luck Tulsa rallied from 9-6 down to tie the game late, but Kevin Jackson capped off a four goal night by notching the game-winner with just 44 seconds left. The B-52s will face Chicago in the quarterfinals on February 1. Wichita, who were eliminated from the Newman Cup playoff hunt, improved to 6-6. The B-52s are 6-0 against Tulsa and the Illinois Piasa, but 0-6 in the rest of their games. Tulsa fell to 1-11, but have suffered three one-goal losses at home.
