Miners Fall Short in Paducah

Paducah, KY - The Miners and Otters combined for 16 hits as the Otters defeated the Miners 8-6 at Brooks Stadium in Paducah.

The Otters took an early 4-0 lead off Miners starter Michael Carden in the top of the first inning. Carden would pitch two innings for the Miners, allowing four runs. The Otters extended their lead to 7-0 off Miners reliever Matt Sergey. Sergey completed two innings of work for Southern Illinois.

The Miners would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Gerardo Avila hit a base hit to score Cannon Lester to cut the Otters lead to 7-1. Jason Ganek would add a two RBI base hit with two outs to trim the Otters lead by four, 7-3. The Miners would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Jon Eisen scored on a throwing error by Otters catcher John Nester to bring the Miners within three runs, 7-4.

The Otters would extend the lead back to four, 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Gerardo Avila would cut the lead to two runs, 8-6 as he hit a towering two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Otters pitcher Caleb Cuevas.

DuQuoin native and former Salukis closer Bryant George made his Miners debut as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
