Governors' Tradition Continues with the SwampDogs

May 4, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Fayetteville SwampDogs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs continue a successful tradition with the signing of two players from the Austin Peay State University Governors. Pitcher/shortstop Kevin Corey and catcher/first baseman Mike Davis will be joining the SwampDogs for their first season in pinstripes.

Corey has been busy this year playing middle infield and eating up innings out of the bullpen. The 6-1, 185-pound junior is currently hitting .210 with 14 RBIs and 22 runs scored in 39 games this season. He has appeared in four games this season on the mound.

Corey joins Austin Peay following two successful years in junior college. During his sophomore campaign, he had a 2.77 ERA and was the fifth-best in the Golden Gate League with his 61.2 innings pitched and 43 strikeouts. He earned two saves for West Valley Community College in his 9.1 innings of work and also had his best batting days then when he hit .269 and belted seven doubles in 35 games.

In his high school days, the Los Gatos, California native was a First-Team All-Nor-Cal selection as a senior. He batted .455 and broke the school record with 40 RBIs.

His teammate, Mike Davis, is batting .208 with six extra base hits and a .347 slugging percentage to go along with his defensive capabilities. Davis is also a junior and had tremendous success at his previous stop.

While playing for Walters State Community College, the 6-3, 215-pound catcher led the Senators to two TCCAA championships and he finished fourth in the conference with nine home runs. His .318 batting average, 16 doubles and 35 RBIs also helped him earn a First-Team All-TCCAA selection.

Davis is playing in his first full season at the division one level, but the Savannah, Tennessee native is adjusting well.

"I look forward to having Kevin and Mike with us this summer," said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. "They both have a ton of experience and will be a big part of our 2013 success."

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, entering their 13th season in the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
