Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE - Opening night started off with a cruise and ended with a bang as three pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout, leading the Stone Crabs their first victory of the season, 4-0 over the Palm Beach Cardinals.
The Stone Crabs were one out away from the organization's first no-hitter, but a tough line drive into the lights kept the Stone Crabs from making history.
Jake Floethe (1-0) threw five hitless innings in relief of Jesse Hahn, who started the first three. Lenny Linsky rounded out the effort on the mound throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
"Luke (Bailey) called a great game and allowed me to attack the hitters with my sinking fastball. We had great defense behind us and just let it work.," said Floethe. "When we have guys like (Jake) Hager and (Kyeong) Kang making great plays out in left field, it makes it easy to pitch.
Bailey drove in two of the four Stone Crabs runs, a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, while Hector Guevara and Richie Shaffer had one RBI each.
"I hit it and got jammed a little bit, I didn't think it would go out there at first," said Bailey. "As I watched it round the bases I was hoping it would go out but I was happy to get two runs right there."
Although his bat paced the offense, it was Bailey's handling of all three pitchers that was main factor to the Stone Crabs dominant performance.
"It feels good handling this pitching staff, we have a great group of guys that are off to a great start," said Bailey. "Even though first two games were rough, the whole team looked good tonight."
Stone Crabs Manager Brady Williams wanted his team to get on the board early and often in the home opener and after two tough days at the office for his team, Williams was pleased with the overall effort of his team in the victory.
"We talked about scoring first today, in the first two games we got down and we obviously don't want to do that," said Williams. "We wanted to come out today and put a run up early and we happened to get two in the first which let us settle down a little bit."
The Stone Crabs (1-2) finish the opening series against Palm Beach (2-1) Sunday at Charlotte Sports Park with first pitch scheduled for 5:35. Roberto Gomez will make his first start of the season for the Stone Crabs, and is opposed by Tyler Melling for Palm Beach.
