Flash Take Slim Lead In OT

HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Flash needed overtime to defeat the Dallas Sidekicks in the opening game of the Ron Newman Cup Quarterfinals on Sunday night at State Farm Arena by a score of 5-4.

Dallas took an early 1-0 lead with a minute into the game, as Renato Pereira scored on the assist from Jaime Lovegrove.

The Flash tied up the score on an Armando Teran goal two minutes later, which would set the tone for the game as the defenses took center stage. The Flash scored very early in the second period as Edgar Flores notched the second goal for the Flash, as the lead would not last long.

Ricardinho scored a hat trick, with his score the first of his three goals via the penalty 30 seconds later, which leveled things at two between the teams. The Flash however would earn a penalty shot, as Juan Quiroz scored it for the 3-2 lead. Ricardinho would score again via the spot once to tie the game at three and send into the break, as the chances were slim for both teams.

The Flash earned a power play opportunity and did not relinquish it, and took a 4-3 lead midway thru the third quarter as the Erick Flores. The Flash went 1-for-5 on the man advantage for the game. The Sidekicks went 0-for-5 on the advantage.

Ricardinho scored the third eight minutes into the fourth quarter, which tied the game at four and would be the decisive goal that would cause overtime.

In the extra period, with nearly a minute and a half left, Hector Vallejo scored the game winner for the Flash, which gave them the 5-4 victory.

With the slim victory, the Flash hold a one game advantage going into Thursday's return game which will take place at the Allen Event Center with the kickoff set for 7:05 pm. Should the teams split the two games, there will a 30 minute-mini game at the conclusion of game two.
