Soul Looking To Get Back On Track Against Comets

February 21, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Chicago Soul FC News Release

The Matchup

Friday, February 22 at Missouri Comets - 7:35 p.m. (CST)

The Chicago Soul (9-14) will hit the road one last time to face the Missouri Comets (11-12) on Friday, February 22 at the Independence Events Center. Kickoff is set for 7:35 p.m. CT. The Soul will try to bounce back from their two-game skid after dropping to the Rochester Lancers and Milwaukee Wave. The pressure will be on for Chicago, which will try to hang on to the fourth place playoff position, with Rochester right on its tail.

On the Radar

Carlos "Chile" Farias remains in the spotlight as he leads the Soul with 66 points and continues to contribute offensively on a consistent basis. On Monday night against Milwaukee, Farias fueled Chicago's comeback in the third quarter with a hat trick, finishing with seven points on the night.

Roberto Gallo, who had been out since early January with an injury, is set to return on Friday. Prior to his injury, Gallo led the team in blocks with 16 and ranked among the top defenders in the league. The Soul will turn to Gallo for a much-needed defensive boost against the Comets on Friday night.

Missing In Action

The MISL announced on Wednesday that three members of the Soul would serve game suspensions after Monday night's clash with the Wave. Tijani Ayegbusi has been suspended for the remainder of the season, including playoffs, while Fred Degand and Carlos Muñoz have been suspended for one game. All three players will miss Friday night's action, leaving a void that the Soul will have to find ways to compensate for to keep hopes for the playoffs alive. Muñoz, who currently holds 56 points, is a key offensive leader for the Soul. Meanwhile, Ayegbusi and Degand have proved to be a few of Chicago's most valuable defenders.

The Soul will also miss another key defender in Aaron Nichols, who suffered an injury during practice. Nichols is on day-to-day status.

The Competition

The Comets most recently took down the league-leading Milwaukee Wave, snapping their 16-game winning streak with a 17-9 victory. Missouri, which currently sits in third place in league standings, is now closer to securing one of the two playoff spots remaining. The Comets will need just one more win to clinch a playoff berth and lock in the third seed.

Missouri is led by Byron Alvarez (70 points), Leo Gibson (67 points), and Vahid Assadpour (62 points). Gibson, who was recently named MISL Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Month in January, has been hot as of late, recording his sixth hat trick of the season on Sunday against Milwaukee. He will be a key player for the Soul to look out for on Friday.
