Teen Sensation Sloane Stephens to Play at Kastles Stadium

Washington Kastles News Release

The newest sensation in women's tennis is coming to Kastles Stadium at The Wharf this July! Sloane Stephens will be back in DC after representing the New York Buzz against Washington at the age of 16 in 2009.

Ranked outside the Top 500 at that time, Stephens is now No. 17 in the world and returning to Mylan World TeamTennis as a member of the Philadelphia Freedoms.

She joins a star-studded lineup confirmed for Kastles Stadium July 7-24, including Washington's Venus Williams and the Springfield Lasers' Andy Roddick.

With big shots and an even bigger smile, Stephens stunned Serena Williams 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to reach the Australian Open semifinals last month. Not since Serena made the semis at the 2001 US Open had an American teen advanced to the Final Four of a Grand Slam tournament.

Stephens shouldn't have a problem readjusting to the multi-colored court at Kastles Stadium. She proved last season that she is adept on all surfaces, advancing to the fourth round at the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Four years ago, Stephens held her own when she went head-to-head with the Kastles. After she and Jarmere Jenkins fell 5-0 against Leander Paes and Rennae Stubbs, Stephens defeated Olga Puchkova 5-2 in singles and teamed with Mallory Burdette to beat Puchkova and Stubbs by the same score in women's doubles.

Now 19 years old, Stephens is the youngest player in the Top 40 of the WTA singles rankings.

Check your inbox the week of March 4 for the full 2013 Kastles schedule, including the exact dates that you can watch Stephens, Roddick and Venus Williams live on the Southwest Waterfront. Then, look out for live Facebook and Twitter coverage of the Mylan WTT Roster Draft at Noon on Tuesday, March 12, when you will learn who joins Venus Williams on the Kastles roster this season.
