The Blaze evened the game at 1-1 on a power play with 3:30 left in the first period when Jon Booras slipped past traffic on the left wing and as he tumbled into the crease, David Gilbert slapped the puck inside the right post. Makway also received an assist on the goal and scored one of his own 24 seconds later on a wrister from the center point, but the Mavericks evened the game at 2-2 23 seconds after Makway's goal with 2:43 remaining on a Kellen Tochkin tally.

Goals in bunches continued in the second period. Makway repeated his tally from the previous power play with a goal from the high slot on a man advantage with 18:06 left in the second period to give the Blaze a 3-2 lead with an assist given to Jon Booras. The Mavericks again countered quickly just 46 seconds later on a power play goal by Kenton Miller, then took a 4-3 lead 44 seconds after that on an even strength goal by Trevor Kell.

The Mavericks increased the lead to 5-3 with 13:36 remaining in the third period when Kellen Tochkin deflected a perfect feed from Sebastien Thinel at the right post. Colt King scored from the slot with 12:09 remaining on assists from Tochkin and Trevor Kell to give the guests a 6-3 lead.
