Bolts Fall 18-4 to Fired up Rio Grande ValleyFebruary 10, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) Anaheim Bolts
The crucial Rio Grande Valley win was powered by the side's well-balanced attack, Elliott Martinez, Alejandro Morales, Juan Jalomo, Erick Flores and Robson de Sousa all turning in strong performances.
Having been eliminated from playoff contention in last week's home meeting with the San Diego Sockers, the Bolts came out flat in the opening quarter, which they lost 6-1. Joel Perez, Erick Flores, Damian Garcia, Jalomo, De Sousa and Armando Teran all scored for the visitors, with Anaheim's Danny Barrera firing home in spectacular fashion at the other end.
Debutant Yudai Yamaguchi displayed outstanding footwork to get past two opposition defenders and lay the ball off to teammate Barrera on the right. The 23-year-old flicked it up to himself and converted on a beautiful half-volley past onrushing goalkeeper Juan Gamboa.
The Bolts looked much improved in the second quarter but were only able to convert their dominance into a 2-1 run that saw them trailing 7-3 at halftime. After Zach Bautista and Garr Persson struck for Anaheim, Yamaguchi failed to make it three unanswered as he rattled the crossbar on a shootout opportunity. The hosts subsequently saw matters turn from bad to worse, Rio Grande Valley's Edgar Flores recording a stunning tally on a Bolts powerplay.
Displaying outstanding awareness as he struck the ball first-time deep inside his own half, the midfielder saw his chip sail over netminder Brent Reis and dip just under the crossbar for one of the best goals of the PASL season. It was the period's second memorable moment, Anaheim's Bautista having earlier found the net on a beautiful Jayro Martinez pass over the top of the defense and a first-time centering layoff by Miguel Sanchez.
The Bolts' failure to decisively capitalize on their momentum visibly served to deflate the team's belief in a comeback, as the visitors from Texas struck for five unanswered tallies in the third quarter, bringing their overall advantage to 12-3. Martinez finished off a Damian Garcia feed on a textbook counter-attack, followed by an Erick Flores brace and additional tallies by De Sousa and Jalomo.
The home side accepted its fate in the game's closing period, which the visiting Flash won 6-1 for an 18-4 final score line. After a pair of tallies by Morales, teammates Perez and De Sousa found the net as well and Martinez added a brace of his own. Yamaguchi had the only Anaheim tally of the period.
