Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Neither the Green Bay Gamblers nor the Waterloo Black Hawks could manage a multi-goal lead until less than a minute remained in their tilt at the Resch Center Friday, however the home team eventually pulled ahead by a pair for a 6-4 win during the first of two matchups this weekend.
Power play goals at the beginning and end of the first period helped the Black Hawks carry a 3-2 lead into intermission. Justin Kloos scored from the left dot 5:32 into the game during an advantage. Mike Huntebrinker shoveled a chance into the net with 4:54 remaining before intermission during Waterloo's second power play. In between, Green Bay took a brief lead on goals by Sheldon Dries and Nicholas Shilkey at 7:18 and 10:18 respectively. The margin lasted only 80 seconds before Taylor Cammarata slipped behind the defense for a breakaway from the red line; he slipped a shot into the net off the right leg of goalie Richard Ullberg.
Green Bay scored twice in the second to seesaw back in front. Jordan Gross tied the contest with a power play goal from the right point at 8:35. The Gamblers pulled ahead at 17:09 when Dries redirected a pass from Shilkey on a three-on-two rush. Cal Petersen mitigated the damage in the Hawks net, making three terrific saves from close range on Sebastian Weberg, Shilkey, and Kyle Novak in the twelfth minute of the period. Through 40 minutes, the Gamblers sent 35 shots at the Waterloo goal.
With just 7:26 remaining, Zach Stepan tied the score, capitalizing on a shorthanded two-on-one rush and set up by Vince Hinostroza. However, Alex Kile broke the tie when the Hawks couldn't clear the zone at 16:27. With just under a minute remaining, Barrett Kaib iced the decision, scoring an empty net goal from 185 feet away.
For the night, Green Bay outshot Waterloo 42-37; Petersen made 35 stops, while Ullberg turned aside 33 chances.
The rematch between the Black Hawks and Gamblers is only hours away. Both teams travel to Waterloo for a 7:05 faceoff Saturday night. Good seats still remain for the game; Wheaton Franciscan Health Care will provide a free pedometer for the first 1,000 fans during the first home game of American Heart Month.
