Western New York Flash News Release
Indianapolis, Indiana - The Western New York Flash of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is excited to announce they have selected four players in the 2013 College draft.
Headlining the draft picks for the Flash was standout goalkeeper Adrianna Franch from Oklahoma State, selected sixth overall. The Kansas native was recently called into the full USWNT camp in May of 2012, one of only two collegiate players to be called into the camp. Franch is the first three-time all American to ever come out of the cowgirls program. The 22 year old capped her record-setting career this fall, starting all 20 games for the Cowgirls and recording six shutouts, 79 saves and a 1.07 goals against average. She was named to the All-Big 12 Conference First Team for the fourth time, becoming only the seventh player in Big 12 Conference history to achieve that distinction.
One of the most decorated players in Big 12 and OSU soccer history, Franch owns the OSU career record for shutouts with 38 and led the Big 12 in that category in three of her four seasons. She finished her career with 325 saves to rank second on OSU's all-time list. Franch's 38 shutouts rank sixth all time in NCAA history, and her 8,064:02 minutes in goal rank ninth on the NCAA list. Internationally, Franch also has experience at the U-20 and U-23 levels.
With the 14th overall pick, the Flash selected Amy Barzuk from the University of Colorado. Barzuk was recently named to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's All-Pacific Region third-team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The 2012 team captain from Centennial, Colo., capped a stellar career at Colorado with numerous post-season honors. In her final season as a Buff, she was also named to the All-Pac-12 Conference second-team and was a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention.
Barczuk is one of just four Buffs to have played in all of her team's games spanning a four-year career. She holds the 9th and 12th spots in the CU record books with 76 games started of 78 games played and ranks 6th in minutes. With 124 shots attempted in her career, she holds down the 11thall-time spot at CU.
In the third round, as the 22nd pick overall, the Flash selected Vicki DiMartino from Boston College. DiMartino, a 5'7"midfielder comes to WNY as a 2009 PARADE All-America team, All-ACC Freshman of the Year, All-ACC second team and a member of the All-ACC Freshman team. She also earned Soccer America's Freshman of the Year Award along with NSCAA All-America second team honors and Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie first team, Soccer America All-Freshman first team honors and was selected to the All-ACC first team. Her 34 career goals are third on the all-time list and 25 career assists placed her 5th on the all-time list. The Massapequa native has 91 games for her alma mater and is tied for second on the all-time list.
Internationally, DiMartino earned the Silver Boot as she scored five goals at the Under 17 Women's World Cup in 2008, in which the US earned a silver medal. DiMartino's two older sisters are familiar with the WNY Flash, having played against them for the WPS Philadelphia Independence and WPSL Elite NY Fury in the 2011 and 2012 Championship matches, falling to the Flash both times.
With their last pick in the draft, the Flash selected Jackie Logue from Wake Forest as the 30th pick overall. The New Jersey native ended her career as Wake Forest's all-time appearance leader with 94 games played and 89 starts. The three-year captain and defender of the Demon Deacons tallied six career goals and 13 career assists for a total of 25 points. Logue was selected to the 2010 and 2012 NSCAA All-Southeast Region Team and was a three-time member of the Capital One Academic All-District Team.
