Ice ChipsJanuary 11, 2013 - Federal Hockey League (FHL) Press Release
There were quite a few new faces in the lineup for the Whalers on Friday night, and so far head coach Phil Esposito has to be pleased with what he sees. Phil Aucoin had a hat trick and an assist in his first game as a Whaler and Mike Brown made 32 saves as the Whalers defeated the Thousand Island Privateers 6-3.
Cody Ayers opened the scoring for the Whalers at 8:29 of the first on a shorthanded goal, his 16th. Mike Atkinson made a beautiful pass across the slot on a 2 on 1 opportunity and Ayers buried it to give the Whalers the lead. Phil Aucoin would connect for his first of three at 12:01 of the first on a beautiful wrist shot over the blocker of the Privateers goalie Matt Anthony to extend the lead to 2-1. The Whalers defense, which played very well in this game, would make it's only two big mistakes at 16:42 and 16:57 of the first, as Taylor Larsen and AJ Tesoriero would score 15 seconds apart to tie the game at two. But Phil Aucoin would give the Whalers the lead back for good at 19:25 of the first on another quick wrist shot to the blocker side.
"I wasn't trying to do too much out there tonight. I really just wanted to get a feel for the pace of the game and get comfortable with my new teammates. It definitely feels great to help my team get a big win tonight." Whalers forward Phil Aucoin.
Steve Brown would score his first of the season at 9:30 of the second, a goal which would turn out to be the game winner. Brown walked the blue line and sent what seemed like a harmless wrist shot towards the cage that squeezed through the five hole of Anthony.
The Privateers would inch a little bit closer in the third on a powerplay goal by Taylor Larsen(6), his second of the game. But that's as close as they would get as
Richard Vanderhoek (3rd) connected at 18:49 of the third on a pretty backhand to give the Whalers a two goal advantage. Aucoin would seal the deal with his 3rd of the game into the empty net with 15 seconds to go.
Matt Anthony made 35 saves as the Privateers lost their third in a row and 8th in their last ten games.
The Whalers return to the ice tomorrow night against the Danville Dashers. Puck drop is at 7:35.
