Piasa Nearly Topple Chicago

January 7, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Illinois Piasa News Release

Glen Carbon, Illinois, 1/6/13 - The Piasa returned home Saturday night after a long 3 week break between games. This was their first game of the new year and also the first game for the Piasa without star Forward, Elvir Kafedzic, who signed with the Rockford Rampage shortly before Christmas.

The game Saturday night marked the halfway point of the season and with the Piasa sitting at 1-8, yet only 2 games out of 3rd, the team was hoping to reverse their fortune. But this first game up for the team was sure to be a tough one facing the Chicago Mustangs, 6-2 in the Central Division.

The Chicago Mustangs took a 5-1 lead into halftime, with the lone Piasa goal coming from Jon Fridal at 11 minutes into the 2nd Quarter. Things looked dismal for the Piasa.

The 2nd Half turned out to be just the opposite for the Piasa as the team showed a spark that they had been lacking. Both teams scored 2 goals in the 3rd Quarter, including a goal by the Piasa's former star goalkeeper for the last 2 seasons, Greg Crook, and also a goal by Azeem Razwan. The score was 7-3 Chicago, going into the 4th Quarter.

The Piasa simply dominated the 4th Quarter and Alan Hagerty was dominant in goal. Greg Crook added another goal in the 4th minute and Jon Fridal also tallied not even a minute later to make the score 7-5. At the 11th minute, Jon Fridal scored his 3rd of the game, his first hat trick of the season, and all of a sudden the Piasa were only down by 1.

Piasa kept battling and Hagerty and the defense kept doing their job, but they just couldn't break through. The final score: Chicago Mustangs 7 - Illinois Piasa 6.

It was a great effort by the Piasa, and hopefully the team can keep that momentum going when they host 2nd place Cincinnati on Friday night, January 11, 7:35 pm at The Sports Academy.
