Indiana Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS-The Indiana Ice announced today that former Indy forward Sean Kuraly and goaltender Jon Gillies were selected to represent the United States at the World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia. The international hockey tournament runs from December 26-January 5, 2013.
Former Indy and current Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson was the last Ice alumni to make the USA squad for the 2010 World Junior Championships. He scored two goals in the gold medal game against Canada, including the overtime game-winner, en route to a WJC All-Star team selection.
Kuraly joins the Team USA bench after spending the beginning of the 2012-2013 with the Miami (OH) University RedHawks. Prior to his stint with the RedHawks, the 2011 San Jose draft pick was an integral part of the Indy offense for two seasons, finishing second in points (70), goals (32) and assists (38) in the 2011-2012 campaign. He finished his USHL career with 41 goals in 110 regular season appearances and eight points (4G, 4A) in 11 playoff games.
Gillies rewrote the Ice goaltending record books during his two-year career with Indy, compiling 46 wins in 78 games before moving on to the Friars of Providence College. The 2012 Calgary Flames draft pick also holds franchise records for shutouts (6), minutes played (4416:18) and saves (2134). Gillies also holds the franchise marks for longest win streak (6) and the longest consecutive scoreless streak (182:04), set during the 2010-2011 season.
Team USA opened the tournament today, scoring a 8-0 victory over Germany. WJC action continues against host Russia on Friday, Dec. 28. The Americans wrap up the preliminary round against Canada on Sunday, Dec. 30 before a New Years Eve date with Slovakia.
