Rainmen Win with Half Court Shot at Buzzer

(HALIFAX, NS) The Halifax Rainmen returned to the Metro Centre on Friday and put on a show for an audience of more than 2000, as they earned a hard fought victory over the Oshawa Power 90-87. Early on, the Rainmen were plagued by 10 turnovers and trailed 20-18 after the first quarter. Tisby had seven and Brown had six to lead the Rainmen early. The Rainmen took a 29-27 lead on Tyler Richards bucket midway through the second, and held on for a 42-39 advantage going into the half. In the first half the Rainmen were led by Tisby with 11 points and 7 rebounds, Brown with eight, and Richards with a career high eight points.

In the third quarter the Power had an early run to take the lead, but Joey Haywood hit a basket to beat the third quarter buzzer and give the Rainmen a one point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 70-69. Hillary Haley hit a three to give stretch the Rainmen lead to 77-73, but the Power tied it up at 77 with just over five minutes to play, and were able to take a 85-81 lead with less than two minutes to play.

Antoine Tisby hit two free throws, and Melvin Goins hit one to make it a 85-84 game with less than a minute to play. After Bo Harris hit two free throws to give the Power a 87-84 lead, Joey Haywood hit an incredible closely contested three to tie the game at 87 with 3 seconds to play. The Power had one final chance, but turned the ball over, and in one fluid motion Quinnel Brown stole the ball, turned around and fired a shot from beyond half which left his hands just before the buzzer sounded. Brown's heave sailed the length of the floor, banked off the backboard and fell through the hoop as the Metro Centre exploded, giving the Rainmen an incredible 90-87 win.

The Rainmen were able to win despite a season high 29 turnovers. The team shot 41% from three point range, including two makes in the final 10 seconds to tie and win the game. The Rainmen also fought hard on the boards, out rebounding the Power 48-40 and 20-16 on the Offensive glass.

The Rainmen improved to 6-5 on the season and 4-1 under Coach Rob Spon. They were led by centre Antoine Tisby who had another strong game with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Quinnel Brown added 14 points and Joey Haywood and Hillary Haley each had 13 points each. Point guard Josiah Turner had a Rainmen season high 11 assists, along with 8 points and 7 rebounds.

The Power fell to 6-6 on the season. They were led by forward Amani Daanish who scored 20, guard Mark Gomilla and forward Bo Harris who each had 16, and forward Jushay Rockett with 15.

The Rainmen face the Saint John Millrats at home Tomorrow night at 7 PM.
