Stay tuned to the Kastles' Facebook and Twitter pages over the next several days for news on other surprises that are in store for fans who join the celebration.
The Kastles are making a habit of being honored at DC's City Hall.
October 7, 2008 was declared Washington Kastles Day by the DC City Council following the team's inaugural season. The Kastles received a key to the city from former Mayor Adrian Fenty on August 27, 2009 in honor of the team's first WTT Championship. Mayor Gray declared a second Washington Kastles Day on September 13, 2011 following the team's second WTT Championship.
Paes Wins Indian Grudge Match for Shanghai Title
Arina Wins 2nd Title in 3 Weeks, Kops-Jones Gets 3rd in 4
In what Leander Paes described afterwards as a "personal match," the Kastles' captain and Radek Stepanek defeated Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna 6-7(6), 6-3, [10-5] to capture the Shanghai Rolex Masters doubles title on Sunday.
The three Indians involved were playing for pride after Bhupathi and Bopanna created a national controversy by refusing to partner Paes at the London Olympic Games.
How matters got to that point could fill a book. The E-friendly summary is that Paes and Bhupathi won three Grand Slam titles before disbanding in 2002 and reuniting in 2011, when they reached the Australian Open final.
But they had another falling out last fall, bringing Bhupathi and Bopanna together for 2012 while Paes played much of this season with Stepanek.
The fifth-ranked Paes, 10th-ranked Bopanna and 16th-ranked Bhupathi had entered 15 of the same tournaments this year without encountering one another in the draw... until Shanghai.
In the latest chapter of the Paes/Bhupathi rivalry, it was the Kastle who came through in the clutch, serving all five of his team's aces. Bhupathi, on the other hand, was broken twice in the match, including in the pivotal eighth game of the second set.
Paes and Stepanek saved four of five break points in all to clinch their fourth title as a team, adding to winners' trophies from Delray Beach in 2004 and the Australian Open and Miami earlier this season.
"Today was a bit more of a personal match for us three Indians," said Paes. "Radek came in and he made it fun for me. He relaxed, laughed, joked. Said, 'stay smooth, relaxed and have a hungry intensity'. I come up and make it fun for him and try and take over whenever I can."
The Kastles' captain is now 12-9 lifetime and on a four-match winning streak against Bhupathi, including wins in the 2009 US Open and 2010 Miami Masters 1000 finals.
Shanghai marked Paes' 13th Masters 1000 title to go along with 13 Grand Slam championships (seven in men's doubles and six in mixed doubles).
The two-time WTT Male MVP Paes and Kastles' teammate Arina Rodionova have both proven that they can succeed in doubles no matter what name is next to theirs in the draw.
Paes has won his 51 ATP doubles titles with 11 different partners, while Rodionova captured the 18th ITF Women's Circuit doubles title of her career on Saturday with her 15th different partner.
'Hot Rod' and fellow Russian Angelina Gabueva defeated No. 1 seeds Sharon Fichman and Marie-Eve Pelletier of Canada 6-4, 6-4 to win the $25,000 championship in Troy, Ala.
The younger Rodionova has now won five ITF doubles titles this season despite missing 10 weeks with a fractured left wrist. Her biggest win came on September 30th with sister Anastasia Rodionova at the $50,000 Party Rock Open in Las Vegas.
Washington's dominant doubles play was also on display over the weekend in Osaka, Japan, where Kastles' wild card Raquel Kops-Jones and New York Sportimes' substitute Abigail Spears captured their third WTA title in four weeks.
Now 15-1 since the US Open, the top-seeded Kops-Jones and Spears did not drop a set in Osaka. They have inched within 32 ranking points of Maria Kirilenko and 2009 Kastle Nadia Petrova in the race for the fourth and final doubles spot at the year-end WTA championships in Istanbul.
To punch their ticket to Turkey, the Americans will need to defeat the Russians in the semifinals of this week's WTA Premier event in Moscow.
Kirilenko and Petrova are already there after winning a pair of three-set matches. Kops-Jones and Spears are one round away, having reached the quarterfinals on Wednesday with a 6-3, 1-6, [11-9] victory over Anna-Lena Groenefeld of the Orange County Breakers and Kveta Peschke of the Sportimes.
Kops-Jones and Spears will meet No. 3 seeds Nuria Llagostera Vives and Sania Mirza today for a semifinal berth.
The World No. 15 Kops-Jones is one of six current Kastles in action on tour this week, including WTT Finals MVP Venus Williams, who is playing singles at a WTA International event in Luxembourg.
Williams defeated 15-year-old Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday in her first match since leading the Kastles to their third WTT championship on Sept. 16. She will meet No. 9 seed Mona Barthel in a second-round match at 11:30 am today.

WTT and Mylan Announce Three-Year Collaboration
PITTSBURGH and NEW YORK (Oct. 16, 2012) - Mylan (Nasdaq: MYL), one of the world's leading generics and specialty pharmaceutical companies, and World TeamTennis (WTT) announced on Tuesday a three-year agreement whereby Mylan will serve as the title sponsor of WTT, which will be renamed Mylan World TeamTennis.
Mylan CEO Heather Bresch commented, "Mylan chose to partner with WTT due to our organizations' shared commitment to helping people around the world overcome barriers to access. For WTT, access means making sure everyone has the opportunity to participate on a team, preparing people-regardless of age, gender or race-to compete both in sports and in life. For Mylan, access is our purpose. We are working every day to set new standards in health care and provide the world's 7 billion people access to high quality medicine-and breaking down barriers to access along the way. For instance, we are working to make drugs more affordable, reach underserved geographies, address unmet medical needs, overcome inadequate infrastructure and help shape policy."
Mylan Executive Chairman Robert J. Coury said, "We are very excited to partner with WTT to educate more people about what Mylan and WTT are doing to support access. We believe that this collaboration will serve both to accelerate the individual efforts of our organizations and allow us to accomplish even more together on the many shared objectives we care passionately about."
Mylan will serve as the title sponsor of the WTT Pro League's more than 50 matches per season through 2015 and aims to extend the reach of WTT to new markets outside of the U.S.
"Mylan and WTT share the same ideal of access and opportunity for everyone," said Ilana Kloss, WTT CEO/Commissioner. "We are excited to partner with a global company like Mylan, and we will work together to elevate our respective brands and create greater opportunities for access both in the U.S. and international markets."
Mylan WTT includes professional coed tennis teams in eight U.S. markets. Most of the sport's major champions have played WTT since the League was co-founded by Billie Jean King in 1974. Venus Williams led the Washington Kastles to their second consecutive undefeated season and WTT Championship last month in Charleston, S.C. The 38th season of WTT kicks off next July. WTT always has been known both for access and innovation in the sport, including instant replay technology, on-court coaching, playing let serves and time outs during sets.
Under the agreement, Mylan also will be the title sponsor of Mylan WTT Smash Hits through 2015. Smash Hits is the annual charity event co-hosted by Billie Jean King and Sir Elton John to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) and various local AIDS charities. Mylan, which sponsored the event in 2012, is one of the world's leading providers of affordable antiretroviral medicines used to treat HIV/AIDS and has a long history of taking an active role in the fight against this disease.
