Ice Earn Road Win at Green Bay

October 17, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Indiana Ice

The Indiana Ice claimed their first road win of the season in high fashion Wednesday night as they defeated the reigning Clark Cup Champion Green Bay Gamblers 5-3 from the Resch Center.

Indy's snipers lit up the scoreboard in the first period as the Ice scored four of the six combined goals in the opening marker. Five different Icemen logged goals while Austin Ortega (G, A, +4) and Robbie Baillargeon (2A, +3) combined for four points and a +7 plus-minus rating in the contest. Brian Morgan also tallied his league-leading third game-winning goal.

Dalton Izyk was solid in net as the second-year goaltender turned away 28 of Green Bay's 31 shots on goal. Izyk is now tied for first among USHL netminders in games played (6) and tied for second in wins (3).

The goal lamps almost had to be replaced in the first period as both teams combined for a staggering six goals in the opening frame. Back and forth goals tied the contest at 2-2 midway through the period before the Ice scored back-to-back tallies to take a 4-2 lead into the first intermission.

Alex Smith recorded his first goal of the season a mere 88 seconds into the contest with a low shot in the slot to beat Gamblers' goaltender Michael Rotolo for the opening score. Ortega earned helper's credit on the score.

Green Bay's Matthew Weis evened the tilt at 1-1 before Drew Smolcynski's wrister from the top of the faceoff circle went into the net to give Indy a 2-1 lead.

The hosts answered again off the tape of Kevin Irwin and almost took the lead on a washed-out goal. A pair of unanswered goals by Woody Hudson and Morgan gave Indy the 4-2 lead going into the first intermission.

Hudson scored off a Canon Pieper deflection while Newmeyer intercepted a pass in the neutral zone to feed Morgan on the wraparound goal.

After giving up four goals on eight shots in the first period, the Gamblers swapped out Rotolo for rookie goaltender Richard Sabol to finish the game. Baillargeon and Ortega immediately tested the rookie netminder when Baillargeon striped the Green Bay at the point and fed the puck to Ortega, who beat Sabol on the low glove-side for the score.

The Gamblers' Alex Kile had to leave the ice for the remainder of the second period after scoring the final goal of the game. A lobbed pass from the face off circle deflected off Kile's face and into the net, finalizing the score at 5-3.

A steady offensive pressure in the third period kept the Ice on its heels in the final stanza. Green Bay doubled up Indy in the shot count with 14 bullets, but Izyk was equal to all as he blanked Gamblers in the closing 20 minutes of the contest to improve to 3-2-1 on the season.

Indy closes up their six-game road stretch on Friday against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders before returning to Pan Am Plaza for a 7:05 pm rematch with Cedar Rapids on Saturday.
