Fours Wild in Party Town

September 30, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Waterloo Black Hawks

Kyle Schmidt and Vince Hinostroza each had four points, and a four-goal third period pushed the Waterloo Black Hawks to an 8-4 win against the Sioux Falls Stampede Saturday in the home opener at Young Arena.

Sioux Falls did not trail during the first 40 minutes of action. Sam Rothstein gave them their first lead of the game at 11:52 of the first period. Sustained pressure in the Hawks' zone eventually led to Rothstein's shot from the high slot which eluded goalie Logan Halladay. At 14:33, Waterloo tied the score; with Schmidt camped at the net for a tip, Hinostroza's shot from the right wing boards was deflected in for Schmidt's first USHL goal.

A high-scoring second period started well for the visitors, but finished strongly for the home side. Kyle Schempp and Todd Skirving each scored less than five minutes into the middle frame, but Schmidt's second of the night at 5:10 temporarily stemmed the tide, as he cashed in on a two-on-one feed from Hinostroza. Sioux Falls went back ahead by two at 10:49 when Dennis Kravchenko stuffed in a chance. However, Hinostroza took over in the final four minutes, beginning with a power play goal ripped to the top corner over the right shoulder of goalie Jan Obernesser at 16:18. Hinostroza struck again with 54.9 seconds remaining, dodging a shot-blocker to fire in a chance low to the stick side.

Waterloo pulled ahead for the first time 5:17 into the third period. During a power play, Blake Winiecki found a loose puck in the crease and knocked it in. Five minutes later Pijus Rulevicius redirected a Zach Stepan wrist shot under the crossbar. In the closing minutes, Ryan Papa scored on a long empty net chance, then Jake Horton capped the night on an odd-man rush with 4.1 seconds remaining.

Saturday's game was the first of six consecutive at home for the Hawks, who meet the Youngstown Phantoms in their next contest on Friday, October 5th. Tickets for all of the home stand and every regular season home game in Party Town are on sale now from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680.
