Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS (Wednesday, September 12): The Hudson Valley Renegades clawed their way back into the New York-Penn League Championship Series, topping the Tri-City ValleyCats 5-2 Wednesday night in Game 2 in front of 2,484 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The win for the Renegades sets up a deciding Game 3 for all the marbles at the Dutch Thursday night. Hudson Valley didn't have a single baserunner until the sixth inning, but managed to surge past Tri-City to even up the series.

Tri-City struck first in the top of the first inning, with Catfish Elkins notching a one-out single off Hudson Valley starter Jesse Hahn. Preston Tucker shot a double into the left field gap to score Elkins, giving Tri-City an early 1-0 lead.

The ValleyCats extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Ryan Dineen led off with a double, scorching a grounder past Richie Shaffer at third base to put himself in scoring position with nobody out. A passed ball by catcher Jake DePew advanced Dineen to third base, and he came home on a sacrifice fly to center by Joe Sclafani. The ValleyCats exited the inning with a 2-0 lead.

Tri-City starter Aaron West was perfect through his first five innings, but a crucial miscue helped the Renegades get to him in the bottom of the sixth. DePew led off with a grounder to the shortstop, but Sclafani's throw to first went astray, allowing DePew to reach safely. After left fielder Marty Gantt struck out looking, right fielder Joel Caminero lashed a single to left field, sending DePew to second. Center fielder Joey Rickard grounded softly to Jesse Wierzbicki at first base for the second out, with the runners advancing to second and third. Second baseman Tommy Coyle pounded a two-out single back up the middle, scoring both runners and tying the ballgame 2-2. Coyle stole second, but Shaffer grounded to third to end the threat. He would get his moment later.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Renegades finally pushed ahead. Caminero led off with a line-drive single into center off reliever Jamaine Cotton, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rickard. The ValleyCats elected to intentionally walk Coyle, putting runners on first and second with one away for Shaffer. The third baseman demolished a first-pitch fastball for a towering homer over the left field fence, a three-run blast that put the Renegades on top 5-2. Ryan Garton entered for the ninth inning and set down the ValleyCats in order to secure the win.

Hahn allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings on four hits against four strikeouts. He hit one batter and issued three intentional walks. Jose Molina tossed 1.2 innings of perfect relief with one strikeout. Dylan Floro retired the only batter he faced before leaving due to injury. Alex Moshier allowed a hit and struck one batter, but worked a scoreless eighth inning to get the win. Garton struck out two in his perfect inning of relief for the save, his second of the playoffs.

West allowed two unearned runs on two hits over six innings, fanning six. Cotton took the loss, coughing up three runs on three hits and issuing an intentional walk in two innings.
