Mobile BayBears News Release
The Mobile BayBears couldn't close out a two-run, ninth inning lead over the Birmingham Barons, falling 5-4 in twelve innings at Regions Park Friday night. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Barons loaded the bases with a single from Brady Shoemaker and back-to-back walks. Down to his final strike, Justin Greene delivered a game-tying, two-run single that sent the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the twelfth inning, Greene reached base with an infield single and moved up to second base after a balk by BayBears RHP Eric Smith. A sacrifice bunt moved Greene to third base and Jose Martinez hit a fly ball deep enough to right field to allow Greene to tag up from third base and score the game-winning run.
The BayBears jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring one run in the top half of the second inning and three more in the third inning. In the second inning, Alfredo Marte (pictured right) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from David Nick. In the third inning, Chris Owings put the BayBears up 2-0, scoring Evan Frey with a RBI single and Mobile extended the lead to 3-0, after three straight walks scored Owings. Matt Davidson capped the BayBears scoring in the third inning, crossing the plate on a RBI ground out from Marte.
BayBears RHP Derek Eitel started the game for Mobile. Eitel allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings. RHP Evan Marshall blew just his third save of the season, walking two batters and allowing the Barons to score two runs on two hits in the bottom half of the ninth inning. Smith was credited with his first loss of the season after he gave up the game-winning run, despite holding the Barons to just two hits in 2.2 innings.
The BayBears and Barons continue the five game series Saturday, August 4, at 6:30 PM.
