San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Scorpions set an NASL-record in goals scored in a single match Saturday night, defeating the Carolina Railhawks in an 8-0 rout at Heroes Stadium.
Pablo Campos scored four goals, the most he has tallied in a single match, and now has a league-high 15 goals on the season.
Greg Janicki added two more goals while Esteban Bayona and Blake Wagner also scored to lift the Scorpions to their 10th win of the season, becoming the first NASL club to reach that mark this season.
The Scorpions (10W-5T-3L) remain atop the NASL standings with 35 points and will finish their three-game homestand on Sunday, Aug. 5 against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
"It's good to have a game like this where we know we can score a lot of different ways with a lot of different people," Scorpions Head Coach Tim Hankinson said.
The Scorpions struck first on a free kick in the 6th minute from Jonathan Greenfield, who stepped up and delivered the ball into the box where Janicki pushed it past the RailHawks keeper Ray Burse for his first goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, Luiz Tiago sprinted up the field and found Pablo Campos one-on-one with a Carolina defender, beating him to a ball into the box and placing a shot past RailHawks goalkeeper Ray Burse for his first goal of the match, giving the Scorpions a 2-0 lead.
When RailHawks defender Austen King was sent off with a red card after bringing down Pablo Campos just outside the box in the 32nd minute, the Scorpions played the rest of the match with a one-man advantage.
In the 54th minute, Campos surpassed his goal total from 2011 as a member of the RailHawks by converting a penalty kick after being taken down in the box moments earlier.
Janicki scored his second goal of the game in the 59th minute, giving the Scorpions their first four-goal game in franchise history.
Two minutes later, Esteban Bayona made it 5-0 with his fifth goal of the season as the Scorpions continued their largest scoring outburst of the season.
Four minutes would elapse before the Scorpions stung the RailHawks again with a blast from defender Blake Wagner, rifling a shot from 30 yards out that was beyond the reach of Burse for his first goal of the year.
Pablo Campos beat Burse for the third time in the 72nd minute, giving him a hat-trick for the first time this season and giving the Scorpions a 7-0 advantage.
In the 81st minute, Campos again found the back of the net for the fourth and final time to finish the scoring.
A crowd of 7,186 was on hand to witness the most lopsided win in NASL history, as team improved its unbeaten streak at home to nine games.
