Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- Derek Dietrich's five RBI night fueled the Stone Crabs offense as Charlotte took down the Clearwater Threshers, 10-4 on Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
The Stone Crabs rode another solid outing from Victor Mateo (4-3), who has allowed just eight earned runs across four starts in the month of July.
Charlotte wasted no time in getting the offense going against Threshers starter Perci Garner (4-6).
With runners at first and second Dietrich drove a triple to the gap in right-center to plate the Stone Crabs first two runs. One out later Phil Wunderlich lifted a high fly ball toward right-center that carried out onto the boardwalk for his seventh home run of the season, giving Charlotte an early 4-0 advantage.
The Threshers chipped away at the lead, with a run in the second and two more in the third inning off Mateo.
The Stone Crabs righty settled in to complete six innings and earn the win. Mateo allowed three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out two.
Charlotte tacked on a run with Wunderlich's third RBI of the evening, a single past a diving Jim Murphy at first to score Dietrich in the bottom of the third.
Up 5-3 in the fourth, the Stone Crabs broke the game open. With two on and one out, Dietrich connected for his 10th home run of the season on the first pitch he saw from Garner, putting Charlotte up 8-3.
Garner was charged with all eight runs on nine hits over 3-1/3 innings of work in absorbing the loss.
Alex Koronis earned his first save in a Charlotte uniform, as the righty reliever entered the game with the Stone Crabs up 8-4 and runners on first and second in the eighth inning. Koronis retired the final two batters of that frame before working a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory.
Dietrich finished the evening 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. He fell just a double short of the cycle, and has now hit safely in six straight games.
With a single in the second inning Robby Price extended his hitting streak to seven games, and is 11-for-25 (.440) over that span.
The Stone Crabs have won three consecutive contests for the first time since May 14-16 against Fort Myers. The victory was also their third of the season against Clearwater, as the two teams are now even in the season series.
Charlotte will try for the series victory against the Threshers on Saturday. C. J. Riefenhauser (7-5) will take the ball for the Stone Crabs opposed by lefty Jesse Biddle (5-4) for the Threshers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
