
Diamonds Knock Racers off in Bottom Seventh, 4-3

Asheville, N.C. - July 1, 2012 - Down 3-2 in the bottom half of the seventh inning and with Rachel Folden on base, Diamonds short stop Biannca Mejia smashed a two-run home run to give Carolina a comeback victory, 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning to clinch their third victory in as many nights against the Akron Racers.
The Racers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when catcher Sam Marder launched a solo home just three batters into the game. Marder continued the hot night, getting another hit and RBI to go 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and one run. She was also walked two times in the game.
Akron managed three runs in the game (2nd, 4th innings) while putting up nine hits on the day. Kelley Montalvo and Jessica Garcia (pinch running for Sam Marder) scored the other two Racers runs.
Lisa Norris took the loss for the Racers, pitching 6.1 innings of work while allowing six hits, four runs and striking out five batters. Three of the six hits given up were home runs.
Four pitchers saw time in the circle for the Diamonds, with former Racers' pitcher Sharon Palma taking the victory for Carolina. Rookie Sara Plourde started things off for the Diamonds, pitching two innings while allowing two hits, four walks and one home run. Her ERA on the season jumped to 15.17 after the short outing, her first as a starter.
Amanda Locke took over next, allowing one run on six hits while striking out one batter in two innings of work. Danielle Spaulding came in to pitch next, throwing six innings while striking out one and walking two. Palma finished the game with one inning pitched, one walk and one strikeout.
