Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly

April 19, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Waterloo Black Hawks

The Black Hawks won four games in five days, closing the regular season with wins against the Tri-City Storm and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, then topping the Storm twice in a best-of-three playoff series. Taylor Cammarata had a goal and two assists to finish the regular season with 69 points, then added three playoff goals. In net, Stephon Williams won three appearances. As Waterloo completed the sweep of Tri-City, P.K. O'Handley won his 30th playoff game as head coach of the Black Hawks.

Hill Among Postseason Leaders

Jamie Hill opened the postseason with two goals and an assist on Monday. Hill recorded his first goal while penalty killing, marking the first time Waterloo has notched a shorthanded marker in the playoffs since 2007. He registered another assist Tuesday. His four points tie him for third in USHL postseason scoring. Only seven other players in the league have claimed at least four points through their teams' first two games.

Hawks Stack PIMs

After being the fourth-least penalized team during the regular season, the Black Hawks found themselves in the box quite a bit more during the first round of the playoffs. Waterloo was assessed 26 penalty minutes per game during two contests against the Tri-City Storm. Three ten-minute misconduct penalties in Game Two exacerbated the situation. The Hawks successfully killed seven of eight Storm power plays, including a perfect five-for-five effort in Game Two.

Hawks Hope for Lysenko Lift

Defenseman Vladislav Lysenko watched six of the Hawks' last dozen regular season games as a healthy scratch. Due to injuries, the 17-year-old Russian was inserted into the lineup for both of Waterloo's playoff games versus Tri-City. He held his own, recording a +1 plus-minus rating. During the regular season, Lysenko played in 17 USHL contests, scoring four assists, and owning a -5 mark.

Taking it to the Road

Counting both the regular season and playoffs, Waterloo has won eleven consecutive games at Young Arena. The Hawks will hope success follows them on the road against the Omaha Lancers. Waterloo has not won a playoff series in which the opposing club had home ice advantage since beating the Tri-City Storm in the 2004 Clark Cup finals. The Hawks' last single game playoff road win was against the Lancers on May 4, 2008.
