Stampede Blanked by Lincoln

February 29, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Sioux Falls Stampede

Sioux Falls, S.D.--A leap day didn't mean a leap of offense for the Sioux Falls Stampede as they were shut out 3-0 by the Lincoln Stars Wednesday night at the Arena. Kevin Roy had a goal and an assist for Lincoln (27-14-4), while goaltender Jackson Techroeb stopped all 16 shots he faced on the evening. Stampede goaltender Charlie Lindgren faced a barrage of shots all night, taking 49 shots and stonewalling 46 of them. Sioux Falls fell to 13-27-4 on the season and 1-7-0 against the Stars this season.

"There's no excuse for not coming and playing hard, and we did not play hard," said head coach Kevin Hartzell, whose team fell to 1-7-2 in the last 10 games.

Neither team was able to take advantage of power play opportunities in a scoreless first period that saw Lincoln outshoot Sioux Falls 19-5. The Herd were able to keep the Stars without a goal thanks to the play of Lindgren, who along with his defense was able to stave off three separate Star power plays.

"Charlie Lindgren was awfully good," said coach Hartzell, adding, "It was like as bad as we were, they weren't going to score and we had to help the pucks into the net", an obvious reference to two of the Lincoln goals which went in off of Stampede players.

Sioux Falls had their lone man-advantage of the first period at 5:39 when Lincoln forward Luke Johnson went off for hooking.

The Stampede suffered a cruel twist of fate with less than four minutes remaining in the second period when Zach McCarver took a flying puck to the face, leaving him writhing in pain on the ice. Only seconds later Lincoln grabbed the first lead of the game when Star Jared Hanson shot a bouncing puck in past Lindgren with McCarver still motionless. However, McCarver would return to the bench minutes later, wearing the number 30 instead of his usual 23. NHL prospect and USHL leading-scorer Kevin Roy made it 2-0 in favor of Lincoln on a wrist shot from the right circle, his 39th goal of the season. Lindgren stopped 13 of 15 shots that he faced in the period. Sioux Falls went 0 for 1 on the power play, while Lincoln was 1 for 1.

Lincoln didn't wait long to add to their lead, as Luke Johnson wristed a shot from the left circle and into the net to put the game at 3-0. The shot deflected off a Stampede skate and through the pads of Lindgren. The Stars would have no trouble holding off the Herd offense the rest of the game, going on to earn the 3-0 victory. Sioux Falls ended up 0 for 2 on the power play on the night, with Lincoln going 1 for 4.

"We've had really good energy, and tonight we obviously did not," said coach Hartzell.

The Stampede hit the road this Friday in Sioux City to take on the Musketeers at 7:05 PM. The Herd will then take on the Lancers on Saturday in Omaha. Fans can catch both games on KELO-AM 1320 and online at www.keloam.com.
