Cleveland Charge News Release
It was a tale of two halves as the Canton Charge lost to the Bakersfield Jam, 109-102, at the Canton Memorial Civic Center on Wednesday night. The loss sets the Charge at 17-17 going into the All-Star break and the final full month of the season, while the Jam improved to 18-15.
The Charge stormed out to a 37-21 lead to begin the game behind 10 points from Frank Hassell and 65% shooting from the floor. Canton continued their momentum in the second quarter by distributing the ball, as everyone got in on the scoring action. Hassell, Travis Franklin and T.J. Campbell were all in double figures at the intermission and the Charge had a 23-point lead at 61-38. Bakersfield was just 12-of-44 for 27% overall from the field.
The Jam used the break to gather themselves and kept attacking to start the third, finally breaking through. They went on a 20-8 run to end the third and slowly whittled Canton's advantage down to 83-75 entering the final 12 minutes. Derrick Byars hit three consecutive three-pointers early in the fourth, and Bakersfield got over the hump to take their first lead of the night with 5:56 left in the game. Bakersfield outscored Canton 71-41 in the second half in the win and ended the season series at one win apiece.
Franklin led Canton with 19 points in 32 minutes off the bench. Campbell had 15 points, six assists and two steals in just 30 minutes before fouling out. Hassell had his ninth double-double of the year with 16 points and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes. Dante Milligan provided eight points and 15 boards in 26 minutes.
Byars paced all scorers with a game-high 27 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in 38 minutes. Renaldo Major poured in 22 with five boards in 34 minutes. Jeremy Wise supplied a double-double of 17 points and 13 boards with six assists in 31 minutes. The Charge were a season-best 96% from the free-throw line as they converted 26-of-27 attempts.
Canton has a week off before they begin a three-game stretch all against the defending champion Iowa Energy next Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center.
