Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have traded right handed relief pitcher Erik Draxton to the San Angelo Colts for starting pitcher Alex Casillas.
Draxton joined the Miners midway through the 2010 season and finished the season as the team's closer. During the 2011 season he appeared in 41 games and compiled a 2-3 record with a 4.84 era, mostly in a middle relief role.
"Drax did a great job for us and we are going to miss having him in the bullpen. His classification changes going into this season from a "rookie" to an "experienced" player. Under Frontier League rules there is a limited number of "experienced" players allowed on your roster thus forcing our hand in a situation like this." said Miners Manager Mike Pinto.
Casillas comes to the Miners following a 2011 season that was split between the Colts of the United League and the White Sands Pupfish of the Pecos League. Over 10 games, 9 as a starter, Alex was 6-0 with a 3.93 era. In 55 innings, he struck out 67, walked 18, allowed only 47 hits for a 1.18 WHIP. The highlight of Casillas season was a complete game shutout with 14 strikeouts.
"Alex comes to us following a very good rookie season. Unlike Erik, he remains a rookie under our classification rules. He has an above average fastball and excellent secondary pitches. He will be an excellent addition to our rotation."
