San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Scorpions FC, the community's new pro soccer team, will compete in a scrimmage against the U. S. Under-23 Men's National Team at 7:30 p.m. CST Friday, Feb. 24, at the FC Dallas Stadium Complex, 9200 World Cup Way in Frisco, Texas. The scrimmage will be open for the public to attend.
"When we play the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team, we'll have had only a week of practice under our belts," said Scorpions Head Coach Tim Hankinson, who will welcome Scorpions players and coaches for their first workout Saturday, Feb. 18. "I think this scrimmage will help jump-start our preparations for North American Soccer League (NASL) competition in April".
The Scorpions will take on a team of Olympic hopefuls coached by Caleb Porter - a former Major League Soccer (MLS) player for the Tampa Bay Mutiny coached by Hankinson - that will represent the U. S. at the 2012 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament starting in late March. It's the Scorpions' second scrimmage against top-flight talent to be announced. On Wednesday, March 14, the team will journey to Banner Island Baseball Park in Stockton, Calif., for a 7:30 p.m. PST bout with a renowned international pro team, Club Dorados de Sinaloa from Culiacán in Northwest Mexico.
The contests with the Olympic hopefuls and Dorados will serve as tune-ups for the Scorpions' inaugural season in the NASL. Their first NASL game will be against the Atlanta Silverbacks on April 7, while the team's home opener is set for 6 p.m. CST Sunday, April 15, at Heroes Stadium against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
When the Scorpions take to the field, it will mark the first time in pro sports history that a team has been organized for the expressed purpose of benefitting a non-profit, namely Morgan's Wonderland, the world's first ultra-accessible theme park designed with special-needs individuals in mind yet built for everyone to enjoy.
Team President Michael Hitchcock recently announced that all reserved seats on the west side of Heroes Stadium have been sold, however general-admission seats are still available. As for the stadium's east side, both reserved seats and general-admission seats are available, he added. For more information and seat reservations, fans can visit www.SanAntonioScorpions.com.
"The Scorpions will compete for a community that's really eager to see soccer played at a high level and for Morgan's Wonderland," Hitchcock said. "We've seen tremendous interest in season-ticket sales and new sponsorships as the 2012 NASL season gets closer and closer."
