Texas Legends News Release

The Texas Legends, in partnership with THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano and the Living for Zachary Organization, will host a Living for Zachary Day at the Legends home game on Sunday, January 29th. Tip-Off is set for 2:30 p.m., with doors open at 1:30 p.m. Living for Zachary has teamed up with THE HEART HOSPITAL and the Legends to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which is the silent killer that caused 16-year-old Zachary Schrah to collapse during a high school football practice in Plano on April 2, 2009.

Zachary's mom, Karen Schrah, felt compelled to warn others about this silent killer. "Each year, thousands of young people and their families are affected by SCA," says Karen Schrah, President and Co-Founder of Living for Zachary. "Living for Zachary is working to raise awareness by providing community education and AEDs to youth organizations."

Zachary Troy Schrah was a fun-loving young man who lived each day of his short life to its fullest. Son of Troy and Karen Schrah, Zac grew up in Plano and loved football and baseball. As a sophomore at Clark High School, Zac played tackle on the JV offensive line at Plano East Senior High School. During 2009 spring training, he was called up to play Varsity during the 2009-10 season. Coaches admired his dedicated work ethic on and off the field. Off the field Zac was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved to ride four-wheelers.

Although he displayed talent in athletics, as a leader, in outdoor activities and even as a cook, Zac's ultimate goal was to be a doctor. Sadly, Zac won't be saving lives as a physician, but there is no doubt that his legacy through Living for Zachary will save many lives. Living for Zachary hopes to demonstrate the ideal Zac described in an essay not long before he died - "Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out."

Every 39 seconds someone in the United States dies from heart disease*, while sudden cardiac arrest claims one life every two minutes, taking more lives each year than breast cancer, lung cancer or AIDS**. Ten thousand young people die from SCA each year*.

Since 2009, THE HEART HOSPITAL has supported Living for Zachary by offering youth heart screenings and community education about sudden cardiac arrest. "THE HEART HOSPITAL is proud to be a part of a group of advocates making a difference in the lives of others," says Mark Valentine, president of THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano. "With the Living for Zachary organization at the forefront we can help raise awareness and provide the resources needed to identify the signs of an oncoming sudden cardiac arrest, and help save the lives of young victims."
