Canton Outlasts Erie, 101-98

Erie, Pennsylvania, Friday, December 9 - The Erie BayHawks (2-4) came up on the short end of a hard-fought battle falling to the Canton Charge (3-2) 101-98 on Friday night at Tullio Arena. Both teams were short-handed as a result several players attending NBA training camps. Five Erie players and two Canton players were invited to various camps which opened today.
Canton took the early lead behind Dante Milligan's nine first quarter points to close the opening period leading 31-28.
Erie would take the lead about a minute into the second quarter during a 13-9 run, powered by ten points supplied by Tirrell Baines. The BayHawks closed out the half with a 15-11 run, with Kyle Spain bringing in six points to help the home team lead 56-51.
The Charge would use a 16-8 run in the third quarter to tie the game at 71 and the next five minutes would bring five lead changes as the teams exchanged buckets. Canton extended their lead to six points at the 9:31 mark of the fourth, only to see Erie charge back and hold a six-point lead of their own with 4:00 remaining. The game was tied again at 96 apiece with 1:26 to play. Milligan drained two free throws and Antoine Agudio sank a three-pointer with under a minute to go to stretch Canton's lead to five.
Baines hit a six-foot jump shot for Erie and Marcus Relphorde missed two free throw attempts for Canton giving Erie one final chance to tie the game. However the BayHawks were unable to connect on a game-tying three-pointer of their own as time ran out and Canton escaped with the victory.
Canton had seven players in double figures including Milligan with a double-double, picking up 19 points and 18 rebounds, followed by Harry Marshall getting 16 points off the bench. Baines also notched a double-double leading the BayHawks with 28 points and 13 rebounds. B.J. Jenkins chipped in 20.
The BayHawks will look to salvage their weekend home series as they host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants Saturday night at 7 p.m., while Canton heads home for a 7 p.m. game against the Maine Red Claws.
