Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton Dragons shortstop Billy Hamilton today was listed as the # 2 prospect in the Midwest League in 2011 by Baseball America, the national trade publication covering Minor League Baseball. Baseball America announced its top-20 prospects in the league on Tuesday.

Hamilton was listed # 2 among approximately 700 players who played in the 16-team Midwest League this season. Dragons right-handed starting pitcher Daniel Corcino was listed as the 16th best prospect in the league in 2011 (seventh best pitching prospect).

Baseball America offered the following comment:

"Veteran scouts couldn't remember a MWL player with a more electrifying tool than Dayton shortstop Billy Hamilton's speed. To call it game-changing would be an understatement, as opponents were virtually powerless to prevent him from becoming the first minor leaguer in 10 years to steal 100 bases."

Hamilton finished with 103 stolen bases, the most ever by a player in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Hamilton improved dramatically over the course of the season. After batting just .233 in the first half, he hit .318 in the second half to finish at .278. He led the league in runs scored (99) and finished second in base hits. Hamilton and right-handed relief pitcher Drew Hayes were selected to the 13-man full-season Midwest League All-Star Team as the best in their positions in the circuit.

Hamilton helped the Dragons to a franchise-record 83 victory total in 2011. Their 83-57 full-season record was the best in the Midwest League. The team earned its third-ever division title when they captured the second half Eastern Division championship with a 48-22 record that was the best in all of Minor League baseball among leagues that play a split-season format.

Clinton pitcher Taijuan Walker was selected by Baseball America as the # 1 prospect in the league in 2011. Others in the top five included Lansing outfielder Jake Marisnick (# 3); West Michigan third baseman Nick Castellanos (# 4); and Fort Wayne outfielder Rymer Liriano (# 5).
