Red Sox Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Attend Baseball Dinner
September 23, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, N.H.- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are pleased to announce that Boston Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will attend the 2011 Granite State Baseball Dinner, presented by Northeast Delta Dental. Also added to the list of special guests is former Detroit Tigers outfielder Ron LeFlore.
Saltalamacchia, whose last name is the longest in Major League Baseball history, is playing in his first full season with the Red Sox after being traded to Boston from the Texas Rangers just prior to the 2010 trading deadline. The 26-year-old native of West Palm Beach, Florida has taken over as Boston's everyday catcher, accumulating career highs in doubles (23), homeruns (16) and RBI (56) in 98 games this season.
Nicknamed "Salty" by his teammates, Saltalamacchia was the Atlanta Braves first-round pick (36th overall) of the 2003 amateur draft and made his Major League debut with the Braves in 2007. Later that season, Saltalamacchia was traded to the Rangers as a part of the Mark Teixeira deal before being dealt to the Red Sox last year.
LeFlore, an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers for six years, was primarily known as a base stealer during his playing career. He led the American League with 68 steals in 1978 and then stole a league and career-high 97 bases with the Montreal Expos in 1980. LeFlore is also known outside of baseball as his life story is chronicled in the book titled, Breakout: From Prison to the Big Leagues and was later made into a movie called One in a Million.
Saltalamacchia and LeFlore join Sam Fuld, Chris Carpenter, Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, Bernie Carbo and Oscar Gamble as the first seven special guests confirmed for the charitable event.
Tickets for the Granite State Baseball Dinner, presented by Northeast Delta Dental, are $75 and are available at the Fisher Cats Ticket Office, www.nhfishercats.com and by calling 603-641-2005.
