Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Silverbacks Women clinched the Eastern Conference title Saturday night, finishing the USL W-League regular season with a 4-1 win over the Virginia Beach Piranhas at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

In the opening minutes of the match, the Women (9-1-0) had a pair of scoring chances, but the Piranhas (5-4-0) got on the board first. A cross from Virginia Beach forward Anja Barwinsky found the head of forward Stephanie Goddard, who powered the ball past goalkeeper Ashley Baker, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The Women immediately evened the score when forward Megan Tomlinson beat goalkeeper Victoria Johnson with a shot from 18 yards out. Forward Susannah Dennis picked up the assist.

Dennis scored a goal of her own in the 23rd minute, giving the Women a 2-1 lead. Dennis netted a low, hard shot to the corner of the goal, after receiving a quick pass from defender Bailey Powell. The Women quickly doubled their one-goal advantage in the 30th minute when midfielder Alexa Newfield dribbled through the Piranhas' defense, lofting a chipped effort into the net for a 3-1 lead.

Just after halftime, Newfield's second goal of the game put the Women on top, 4-1. A pass from fellow midfielder Rebecca Nolin gave Newfield a breakaway opportunity, which she slipped past Johnson. With the help of several second-half substitutions, the Women controlled possession for the remainder of the game and emerged as 4-1 winners.

The Silverbacks Women completed the regular season as division and conference champions and are set to begin W-League playoffs on July 21. The Women will meet the New Jersey Wildcats in the opening round, with the location and game time still to be determined.
