Gems Add Key Leader from Last Season

June 27, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH - Brett Lutes will be returning to Dayton for the 2011-2012 season.

The announcement comes just days after the Gems publicized the return of veteran players Greg Labenski and Chris Lipsett, who have played professional hockey for more than 10 years each.

The 29-year-old from Riverview, NB will be entering his eighth season in professional hockey. It will be his second straight season with the Gems and his third straight in the CHL.

"Brett is a very talented forward that is capable of playing any position on the powerplay. He is also someone that does the little things right on and off the ice and is a true professional. With his return, we now have the team's core leadership in tact from last season," said Head Coach Brian Gratz.

Last season Lutes recorded 19 goals and 28 assists in 52 games. His 47 points were the third best on the team for the 2010-2011 season. The 19 goals he scored was the fourth best total on the team.

He also spent 104 minutes in the penalty box last season.

Prior to arriving in Dayton, Lutes spent the 2009-2010 season with the Colorado Eagles. While there he amassed 50 points for the season on 16 goals and 34 assists. In four playoff games with the Eagles that year, he recorded two goals.

In addition to the CHL, Lutes has spent time in the ECHL, the UHL and in Germany. Lutes started his professional career with the Bakersfield Condors in the ECHL.

During the 2008-2009 season, Lutes went across the pond in Germany to play for the Crimmitschau ETC.

Over the course of his seven year career, Lutes has played for teams that have made the post season five times - including last year's appearance with the Gems. In 28 playoff games, Lutes has scored five goals and recorded 12 assists.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Dayton Gems.
