Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs went down fighting in a 10-8 defeat at the hands of the Palm Beach Cardinals on Tuesday at Roger Dean Stadium.
Frank De Los Santos suffered through a disastrous first inning. The Cardinals sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight runs in the opening frame. Rainel Rosario homered twice, depositing De Los Santos' first pitch of the night over the center field wall before connecting for a two-run blast later in the inning. It was a big night for Rosario, who finished 4-for-5 with four RBI's.
De Los Santos (0-1) was touched up for nine runs - all earned - on 12 hits in just three innings of work. The lefty has now surrendered 15 runs over his first two appearances of the season, a span of just four innings.
Trailing 8-1 after one inning of play, the Stone Crabs continued to battle their way back throughout the night against Palm Beach starter Justin Smith. Charlotte scored two runs in the third, three more in the fourth and then two in the eighth to eventually trim the Cardinals lead to 10-8.
Chris Murrill went 3-for-5 while Brett Nommensen drove in three runs with a two-hit performance. Five men in the Charlotte order turned in multi-hit nights in the losing effort. Mayo Acosta, Anthony Scelfo, and Matt Hall joined Murrill and Nommensen among hitters with two-hit games.
Third baseman Greg Sexton was robbed of extra-bases on a diving play by Cardinals left fielder Adam Melker in the seventh. An 0-for-5 night snapped Sexton's five-game hitting streak to open the season.
Michael Jarman and Scott Shuman provided Charlotte with quality relief. The duo combined to work five innings and yield just one run on three hits while striking out seven men.
The Stone Crabs brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings but failed to score against Palm Beach closer Aaron Terry. Back-to-back singles had Charlotte primed to score before Terry induced a double play grounder off the bat of Sexton that helped quiet the potential rally.
Jose Rada (2-0) picked up the win in relief. He surrendered two runs over 3 and 2/3 innings. He has been the pitcher of record in both Cardinals wins this season.
The series concludes on Wednesday when the Stone Crabs look for 2-out-of-3 with Alex Colome (0-1) taking the mound against Shelby Miller (0-1) in a battle of highly regarded right-hand pitching prospects. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
