Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Numerous trips to the College World Series, countless post-season appearances, an endless list of players with professional baseball resumes, all capped with four National Championship titles has earned Cal St. Fullerton a reputation as a powerhouse in college baseball. The Fayetteville SwampDogs will feature two Titans on the 2011 roster.
Nick O'Loughlin and Matt Orloff will make their SwampDogs debut in 2011. Though the Titans promise to make a run at the National title, both O'Loughlin and Orloff will look to make an immediate impact on the Dogs lineup upon their arrival.
Orloff began the season as the starting second baseman for the 19th ranked Titans. The 6-0, 175-pound, middle infielder proved himself his redshirt-freshman year as a late inning defensive replacement while appearing in 52 games. His 2011 season is off to a steady start hitting .250 in eight starts. He was redshirted in 2009 following his three year letter run and CIF Championship in high school. Orloff, a Santa Monica, CA native, has an older brother currently playing in the Houston Astros Minor League system.
O'Loughlin will provide depth behind the dish for the Titans in 2011. The 6-0, 200-pound native of Upland, CA is a junior transfer from Fullerton College (CA). His sophomore season he led the team in hitting (.355) with nine home runs and 36 RBIs earning him first team All-Orange Empire recognition. His freshman year O'Loughlin hit .261 with 10 RBIs for the Fullerton College Hornets.
"Cal St Fullerton has always been at the forefront of college baseball powerhouses," said SwampDogs head coach Darrell Handelsman. "We look for these two guys to provide steady bats in our lineup along with solidifying our defense. Both of these young men will prove to be instrumental in our run for the Pettit Cup Championship in 2011."
The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, entering their 11th season in the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
