Texas Legends News Release
Hidalgo, TX (December 26, 2010) - The Texas Legends outscored the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 36-18 in the third quarter en route to a 101-86 victory on Sunday night inside Dodge Arena, ending the Legends three game losing streak.
The Legends used huge night's from a couple of stars in the win, as NBA first-round draft picks Joe Alexander and Dominique Jones combined to score more than half (55) of the teams 101 points.
After see-sawing back and forth through the first six minutes of the game and exchanging the lead seven times, the Legends took control while trailing 12-8 in the first quarter.
Texas would go on a 15-4 tear to end the quarter and then start the second quarter on a 5-0 sprint giving them their largest lead of the first half at 12. However, the Vipers would battle back and end the first half on a 12-4 run of their own over the final three and a half minutes and tie the game up at 43 going into the break.
The Vipers were able to tie the game up at the half despite shooting just over 43% in the first half compared to the Legends 53.6% shooting performance. Justin Dentmon (14) and Alexander (11) would dominate the opening half for the Legends as they totaled 25 of the team's 43 first half points.
The game would be decided early and quickly in the second half, after Alexander and Jones took control of the game and led Texas to a huge third period, taking an 18-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Jones would finish the game with a career-high 30 points, which is also a new Legends single-game scoring record in the team's short existence. The assignee from the Dallas Mavericks also tallied six rebound and six assists in the win.
Alexander grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists to go along with his season-high 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field. He started off on fire hitting his first ten shots in a row through the first three quarters.
The Legends used a season best 59.3% shooting night as a team to improve to 7-5 with the victory, while the Vipers fell to 7-6 on the year.
The Legends will be on the home side tomorrow night at HP Court inside Dr Pepper Arena in the second game of a home-and-home series with Rio Grande Valley. The tip-off for tomorrow nights game is set for 7:00 p.m..
