Vipers Can't Stop Legends' Hot Hands

HIDALGO, TEXAS - The Texas Legends hit 58.6% of their shots to beat the defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley 101-86 Sunday at State Farm Arena in front of a crowd of 4,407.

Joe Alexander hit his first 10 field goal attempts for the Legends (7-5), finishing 11-for-13 with 25 points, nine rebounds (five offensive), five assists and two steals while Justin Dentmon hit his first six shots, finishing 6-for-9 with 17 points and a game-high eight assists. Dallas Mavericks-assignee Dominique Jones led all scorers with 30 points, six rebounds, six assists and one steal.

After a back-and-forth start, the Vipers (7-6) took a 15-14 lead after Antonio Anderson hit a three-pointer with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. The Legends followed with a 14-1 run. Mouhammad Faye hit a pair of free throws and Jerel McNeal hit a jumper to break the run early in the second quarter. The Vipers outscored the Legends 27-5 to close the half tied at 43-43.

Mustafa Shakur opened up the third with a lay-up to give the Vipers their first lead since late in the first quarter. After some back-and-forth play, Shakur hit another three-pointer at the 8:52 mark to tie the game at 52-52. The Legends outscored the Vipers 27-9 over the rest of the quarter to take a 79-61 lead.

The Legends outscored the Vipers 10-3 in the opening minutes of the fourth to take an 89-64 lead that put the game out of reach.

The Vipers were led by Shakur, who scored 21 points with five rebounds and four assists. Richard Roby finished with 14 poinst while McNeal and Garrett Temple each finished with 12 points.

The Vipers and Legends play again on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco.
