Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-A new United States Hockey League season will begin during the first weekend in October, the USHL announced Thursday, with the release of its 2010-2011 schedule.
The Waterloo Black Hawks will begin the 60-game effort at home in Young Arena against their archrivals from Cedar Rapids, the RoughRiders. The matchup will mark the second consecutive year, and the third time during Head Coach P.K. O'Handley's tenure, that Waterloo has opened the home portion of their schedule against Cedar Rapids. The RoughRiders will also visit Waterloo for the teams' traditional Thanksgiving contest November 25th and on Friday, April 1st.
Another highly anticipated series at Young Arena features one of the league's two expansion franchises, the Dubuque Fighting Saints. After a bitter rivalry between Hawks and Saints throughout the 1980's and 90's, Dubuque left the league at the conclusion of the 2000-2001 season. They return for their first visit to Waterloo on October 16th. The Hawks make their first trip to the new Mystique Ice Center in Dubuque on Friday, February 11th.
To minimize travel concerns in the now-16-team USHL, the schedule for each member club is weighted toward regional opponents. Black Hawks President Doug Miller says this was the most challenging schedule that the league has had to organize during his time with the franchise.
"The expanding footprint of the USHL makes it very difficult to schedule," said Miller. "Sixteen teams play 60 games traveling by bus to 9 different states and two time zones. I don't know if there could be a tougher situation for schedule makers. Overall this is a very fan-friendly schedule with many weekend dates to choose from; if people were on the fence about purchasing or renewing their season tickets, this schedule should make it very easy to decide to do so."
The Black Hawks' home slate features 14 Fridays, 14 Saturdays, one Sunday match-up (January 2nd against Indiana), and Thanksgiving Thursday. Waterloo will be at home on both Friday and Saturday during nine different weekends. Other highlights include a New Years Eve home match-up in Party Town against the Des Moines Buccaneers and the Hawks' first-ever meeting with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in western Michigan on October 30th. Muskegon comes to Young Arena for the first time on December 10th. All 30 Waterloo Black Hawks home games will begin at 7:05 during 2010-2011.
Season tickets for Waterloo's upcoming campaign are currently available from the Black Hawks by calling (319) 232-3444. Single game tickets will go on sale from the Black Hawks box office in late September.
