Salmon Kings Add Martin to Blue Line

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Derick Martin for the 2010-11 season.

The Timmins, ON native is coming off a 2009-10 season that saw him split time in the ECHL between the Alaska Aces and Elmira Jackals. Martin began the year playing in 60 games for the Aces scoring 16 points (1g-15a) with 53 minutes in penalties. Following a trade to the Jackals he registered two assists and two penalty minutes in 10 games in Elmira. Martin also dressed for all five of the Jackals' 2010 Kelly Cup Playoff contests where he recorded two points (1g-1a) while serving four penalty minutes.

"Derick is one of the premiere shut-down defensemen in this league," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison. "He will add stability on the backend and will be looked to for leadership. We became very familiar with him while he was in Alaska, and are ecstatic to welcome him to the Salmon King family."

The 28-year-old spent the majority of the 2008-09 campaign with the Aces where he tallied 12 points (1g-11a) in 54 games while accruing 44 penalty minutes. The defensemen helped lead the Aces to the Kelly Cup Final that spring, scoring six assists with 61 penalty minutes in 21 contests. Martin also dressed for 14 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins that season registering no points and 12 minutes in penalties.

The 5-11, 185 lb. defenseman began the 2007-08 season in France playing for CSG Strasbourg where he recorded five points (1g-4a) and 74 penalty minutes in 22 games. After returning to North America, Martin joined the Aces and skated in 27 contests scoring nine points (3g-6a) and serving 18 minutes in penalties. He also spent two games in the AHL that season with the Peoria Rivermen where he had two assists and notched five penalty minutes.

Martin began his ECHL career with two seasons (2005-06 and 2006-07) split between the Long Beach Ice Dogs, Columbia Inferno and Texas Wildcatters. In a combined 137 games over the two years he registered five goals and 30 assists for 35 points with 124 minutes in penalties.

The blue liner started his professional career in 2004-05 with a full season in the Central Hockey League (CHL) with the Lubbock Cotton Kings. In 57 games Martin led all defenseman on the team in scoring with 34 points (9g-25a) while accumulating 71 penalty minutes, and was named to the CHL's All-Rookie Team.

For his professional career, Martin has totaled 115 points (20g-95a) and 403 penalty minutes over 383 games. He has also participated in 57 professional playoff contests having scored five goals and 14 assists for 19 points while receiving 99 minutes in penalties.

Martin had a five-year junior career split between the QMJHL's Hull Olympiques and St. Mary's University. In 253 career games he scored eight goals with 55 assists for 63 points and had 332 penalty minutes.

The Salmon Kings open the 2010-11 season on Friday, October 15th in Idaho with a two-game set versus the defending National Conference champion Steelheads.
