
Tigers Hang Tough in 9-5 Win in Lowell

LOWELL, MA-The Connecticut Tigers (19-16) scored nine runs on 12 hits to get a 9-5 win over the Lowell Spinners (8-29) before 4,980 fans at LeLacheur Park on Sunday night in the opener of a two-game series.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning. CF P.J. Polk (2-3) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a groundout by LF Ryan Enos (1-5). 3B Josh Ashenbrenner (1-5) then grounded out to score Polk for a 1-0 Connecticut lead.
The Spinners tied the game with a run in the first inning against Connecticut LHP Rayni Guichardo (2-2). CF Felix Sanchez (2-5) singled and moved to second base on a groundout by DH Kolbrin Vitek (0-4). SS Jose Garcia (1-5) doubled to score Sanchez for a 1-1 tied score.
Connecticut broke the lead with a two-run fifth inning. Polk walked and stole second base. Enos hit an RBI single to score Polk and 2B Alexander Nunez (2-5) doubled to score Enos and make it 3-1.
1B James Robbins (2-4) led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to make it 4-1.
Lowell added a run in the sixth inning to get within two runs at 4-2 and Connecticut scored another run in the eighth inning when Robbins singled and moved to second base on a single by C Eric Roof (2-4). Polk hit an RBI double to score Robbins and make it 5-2.
Guichardo (2-2) pitched five innings and allowed one run on six hits to pick up the win. RHP Tyler Clark pitched the eighth and ninth inning to get his second save of the season.
After the Spinners tacked on a run in the eighth inning, the Tigers scored four more runs in the ninth inning to earn a 9-3 lead. With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Roof hit a two-run double to make it 7-3. The Tigers scored two more runs in the inning, one on a sacrifice fly by RF Londell Taylor (0-4) and one on a wild pitch.
The Tigers and Spinners finish their series on Monday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. RHP Josue Carreno (1-4, 6.00) gets the start for Connecticut against RHP Tyler Wilson for Lowell (0-2, 5.83). There will be no broadcast of the game on Monday.
