Greeneville Astros News Release
GREENEVILLE, TN - The Greeneville Astros and Bluefield Orioles had another exciting game go down to the wire on Monday night. In the bottom of the ninth, the Astros overcame a two-run deficit to walk away victorious.
Dudley Leonora got the scoring going for Bluefield with a RBI-triple on a line drive to right field in the third inning.
Greeneville got on board in the fourth with a RBI-double from Rafael Valenzuela, who just joined the team earlier in the day from the Gulf Coast League Astros. That tied the game at 1-1.
Over the next two innings, the Orioles took the lead back with another RBI-triple. This time it came off the bat of Brenden Webb. Then, they increased their lead to 3-1 with a RBI-single from Jonathan Schoop on a ground ball to center field.
The Astros bounced right back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. In that inning, Pedro Feliz hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run while Chris Wallace and Telvin Nash each followed with a RBI-single.
The lead, however, was short-lived as the Orioles put two more on the board in the next half-inning. One run came as a result of a throwing error from Greeneville and the other from a RBI-single from Michael Ohlman.
The Orioles added one more run in the top of the ninth when Corey Thomas hit a ground ball single to left field that brought Jeremy Shelby around from second base to score. That gave Bluefield a 6-4 lead, and they were just three outs from the win.
Greeneville, however, had different plans. Rafael Valenzuela led off the bottom half of the inning with a double on a fly ball to right field to start the rally. The next two batters, Telvin Nash and Emilio King, were walked to load the bases. Then, Carlos Mojica was hit by a pitch, and that allowed the Astros to score their first run of the inning.
Then, Ricardo Garcia entered the game as a pinch-hitter and proceeded to get a base hit on a line drive to center field. That scored the second run of the inning and tied the game at 6-6 with no outs.
Finally, the winning run came when Jonathan Merritt drew another walk with the bases loaded to give the Astros a 7-6 win.
Left-hander Travis Smink (1-0) got the final two outs for Greeneville, including one strikeout, and picked up the win.
The Astros begin a new series with the Bristol Sox on Tuesday at 7:00pm at Pioneer Park. Gates will open at 6:00pm. Tickets are available at the Astros administrative office and online.
