Mobile BayBears News Release
HOOVER, Ala. - Josh Collmenter tossed a four-hit shutout in his Double-A debut for the BayBears in game one of their doubleheader against the Birmingham Barons on Friday night at Regions Park en route to a 4-0 victory. Birmingham battled back in the nightcap with a 2-1 win in nine innings.
Collmenter (1-0) was staked to an early lead by the BayBears (21-21) in game one with Evan Frey bunting his way on to start the first against Justin Edwards (0-1). Frey advanced to third on an error by second baseman Dale Mollenhauer and came home when Collin Cowgill bounced into a double play.
That was all Collmenter needed as he worked through the Barons (12-29) with 104 pitches. He scattered four hits in the seven frames and only allowed one man to reach third base when Justin Fuller got there in the third.
The BayBears extended their lead in the sixth inning when Cowgill doubled home Ollie Linton to make it 2-0. Two more came home for the BayBears in the seventh with Linton knocking in Cyle Hankerd on a fielder's choice. A single by Cowgill off Deunte Heath brought home Linton for the final tally.
With right-hander Matt Long on the hill in game two, the BayBears also jumped out to a first-inning lead as Jake Elmore doubled with one out and stole third. Cowgill popped the ball to right field with Salvador Sanchez committing an error on a drop to score Elmore.
Long settled in from there and struck out four while only allowing two more hits. Birmingham knotted the score in the second as Salvador Sanchez's two-bagger scored Christian Marrero. It was the only run allowed by Pat McAnaney, who was sharp in his 5.2 innings while striking out six.
Josh Ellis relieved McAnaney in the sixth and fired off 2.1 scoreless innings before Reid Mahon (0-2) entered the game in the bottom of the ninth. Mollenhauer led off with a single and was pushed to second on a bunt by Jared Price. After John Shelby struck out, Buck Coats was intentionally walked to bring up Greg Paiml.
Paiml, a Hoover native, lined a single into right field with two strikes. Frey charged the ball but couldn't pick it up as Mollenhauer streaked home with the winning run.
The BayBears play another doubleheader against the Barons at 5:05 on Saturday night. They return home next Wednesday to battle the Mississippi Braves at 7:05.
