Hitmen's Martin Jones Named CHL Goaltender Of The Week

Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen is the CHL Goaltender of the Week following two games of the WHL Championship Final. Jones earned two victories including one shutout win posting a goals-against-average of 0.50 and save percentage of .979 to backstop the Hitmen to a 2-0 series lead over the Tri-City Americans for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Jones made 26 saves and was named third star of the 7-0 Game 1 win at home on Friday night, and then followed that up with 21 saves to preserve a 4-1 win in Game 2 on Saturday at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The series now shifts to Tri-City for Games 3 and 4 beginning Tuesday night.

Jones, a 20-year-old from North Vancouver, BC, is playing in his third full WHL season. He was recently named the 2010 recipient of the Del Wilson Trophy awarded to the WHL's Top Goaltender following a 2009-10 campaign where he posted a 36-11-0-1 record and a goals-against-average of 2.21 and save percentage of .919 with an impressive eight shutouts.

Philipp Grubauer of the Windsor Spitfires and Nicola Riopel of the Moncton Wildcats were also considered. Grubauer won three games to help the Spitfires take a 3-0 series lead over the Barrie Colts in the OHL Championship Series for the Robertson Cup posting a goals-against-average of 2.97 and save percentage of .920. Riopel won two games with a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .926 to help the Wildcats take a 2-0 series lead over the Saint John Sea Dogs for the President Cup.
