Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have announced that all-star reliever Jake McMurran will return for his third season with Southern Illinois. McMurran has a career 2.32 ERA, which is more than half of a run lower than any other pitcher in Miners history with at least 55 innings pitched. His 87 appearances are also more than any pitcher in the Miners three year history.

"I'm glad to be back," McMurran said. "I'm excited about all the talent we have back and the new talent coming in. We should more than be able to make a run at the playoffs if all the pitching and hitting comes together."

In 2009 McMurran was again one of the Miners most reliable relievers as he went 5-2 with a 1.76 ERA in 41 appearances and held opponents to a.190 average against. He was nearly unhittable over the last two and a half months of the season, holding opponents to a.166 average after June 21. He allowed just three earned runs in his final 29 appearances of the season. Over that stretch he posted a 0.56 ERA and even had a 22.1 innings scoreless streak that lasted over 12 appearances.

"Jake has been tremendous for us since the day he got here and has become the rock of our bullpen," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "And he keeps getting better. Whether it's to get an out in a big situation or holding the competition at bay for a few innings, Jake has done the job for us time and time again. We simply could not ask for more in either his performance or his daily effort and desire to help us win. I am thrilled to have him back again with us."

The Miners open the season on May 20 at home against River City. For a complete schedule and the latest news on the Miners and events at Rent One Park, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
