Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, MD - The Frederick Keys, Advanced Class-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are proud to announce its field staff for the 2010 season. Orlando Gomez will become the 18th manager in Keys history, supplanting Richie Hebner who moves within the organization to Triple-A Norfolk as hitting coach. Gomez will lead a staff that includes Pitching Coach Blaine Beatty, Field Coach Denny Hocking and Athletic Trainer Patrick Wesley.

Gomez comes to Frederick after leading the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds to a 144-131 (.524) in two seasons. A product of Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico, Gomez played 13 minor league seasons in the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics systems.

He gained his first managerial job in 1977, as skipper of Medicine Hat in the Short Season Pioneer League. Gomez has also worked as a coach and scout in the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays organizations. As a scout for Texas in 1980-81 he signed major league stalwarts Ruben Sierra and Jose Guzman. As a coach he has reached the big leagues with Texas as Bullpen Coach (1991) and First Base Coach (1992). He would return to the major leagues as Bullpen Coach with expansion Tampa Bay (1998-2000) and Seattle (2003-04).

This will be the 16th season in his managerial career. Gomez was named South Atlantic League Manager of the Year in 1989 after guiding the Gastonia Rangers, who featured a 17-year old catcher named Ivan Rodriguez, to a 92-48 record before falling in the league championship series. He has amassed 864 wins in his managerial career.

2010 will be his sixth season in the Orioles organization. All-in-all Gomez will be in his 34th season as a scout, coach or manager and 47th year in professional baseball.

Former Carolina League Pitcher of the Year (Hagerstown, 1987) Blaine Beatty will return to coach the Keys for a fourth year in his five seasons in the Orioles system as pitching coach. Beatty (2006-08) had great success in Frederick, coaching a staff that led the Keys to its third championship in franchise history in 2007.

Beatty reached the big leagues as a pitcher with the New York Mets in 1989 and 1991. He began his coaching career in 1998, working as pitching coach in the Pittsburgh Pirates (1998-2000), New York Mets (2001-2005) and Baltimore Orioles (2006-present) systems. In his time with Frederick, Beatty worked with big league pitchers Brad Bergesen, David Hernandez, Jason Berken, Bob McCrory, Garrett Olson, Kevin Hart and Radhames Liz.

13-year major league infielder Denny Hocking (1993-2005) will make his coaching debut as Field Coach for the Frederick Keys. A former 52nd round selection of the Minnesota Twins in the 1989 draft, Hocking reached the major leagues with the Twins, debuting September 10, 1993. Hocking batted.251 in his major league career with Minnesota (1993-2003), Colorado (2004) and Kansas City (2005).

Wesley, a two-time South Atlantic League Athletic Trainer of the Year, returns for his second season with Frederick and seventh in the Orioles organization. Wesley was an athletic trainer in the Arizona Fall League with the Phoenix Desert Dogs last season. A current Frederick, MD resident, Wesley is the lone returnee for the Keys 2009 coaching staff.
