Surge Fall In Shootout To Ice Flyers 5-4

BILOXI, MS - Matthew Larke had a pair of goals to give the Surge a lead early in the third period, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers got a goal from Mark Hinz and then scored twice in the shootout to defeat the Mississippi Surge 5-4 in a shootout at the Pensacola Civic Center on Friday night.

Pensacola grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Lorne Misita knocked in the rebound of a shot from Rob Campbell at 5:16 of the first period.

Tim Velemirovich's 11th goal of the season evened the score at one-apiece when he rifled a wrist shot past Pensacola netminder Ryan Scott just 34 seconds into the second period. Mississippi grabbed a 2-1 lead when Nick Klaren ripped shot from the right wing off of the far post and the puck bounced right to Jack Wolgemuth, who blasted it home for his second goal of the season at 8:46 of the second frame.

The Surge coughed up the lead early in the third, surrendering a power-play goal to Misita 55 seconds in and then Matt Withers fired through a screen from the left point to give Pensacola a 3-2 lead.

Matthew Larke drew the game even at three-apiece with a power-play goal of his own at 2:54, and then blasted home the rebound of Steve Weidlich's shot from the right point at 4:15 to give the Surge a 4-3 lead. The Ice Flyers tied the game back up when Mark Hinz beat Mississippi goaltender Ryan Senft up high at the 13:07 mark of the third period.

Rob Campbell scored the winner in the shootout, as Mississippi failed to score on all of its' shootout attempts. Ryan Senft made 33 saves and stopped two-of-four shooters in the shootout to earn an OT, and the Surge went 2-for-7 on the power play.

The Surge host the Louisiana IceGators on Saturday, December 26 at 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently-used teddy bear or stuffed animal to throw on the ice after the first Surge goal as part of the annual Teddy Bear Toss! The teddy bears and stuffed animals will be collected and donated to charities that will distribute them to children in need.
